The 2021 'Parenting Healthy Mental Toughness Project'

Registration has reopened but will close for the final time when the timer hits zero...

Are you a coach who'd like to positively influence parent communications within your organisation in 2021? If so, join myself and our Guest Presenters  in the 'Parenting Healthy Mental Toughness Project'...

6 x Parent Support Sessions during 2021 designed to:

  • Support your ability to positively influence parent communications within your organisation
  • Help parents understand what healthy mental toughness is and the critical importance that their parenting communications play in their child's development of it
  • Educate parents regarding the key parent communications that support children's development of healthy mental toughness
  • Help parents understand why their role is so much more powerful than they likely imagined
  • Help parents understand why tennis parenting can be so challenging (this helps parents to become more open to feedback and suggestions)
  • Help parents improve skill in communicating mindfully rather than automatically when faced with tennis parenting challenges (both with their child and you as their child's coach)

Anthony Ross

I'm a former Pepperdine All-American, Wimbledon competitor, and now tennis specific psychologist. Early in my role as a Tennis Australia psychologist, I quickly formed the view that parent interactions were having a greater influence on the way that junior players came to compete in matches than coach interactions.

I decided to explore this topic further in my 12 month Masters thesis where I examined the difference between those players who became mentally tough in their careers versus those who quit the game early or were viewed by peers to have underachieved throughout their careers. The results suggested that parent interactions were the most important factor in mental toughness outcomes.

As a result, I thought it was vital that I discovered how best to support parents on their tennis parenting journey. The result was 3 years of full-time research and support of parents in collaboration with Tennis Australia, 8 x Parent Support Sessions, and 4 clear components that contribute to tennis parenting expertise. I was also able to show empirically that tennis players tend to improve competitive responses simply by helping parents improve their tennis related communications.

My view of parents as the most important factor in player mental toughness outcomes has guided my work ever since.

Rob Barty (Father of World #1 Ash Barty)

I first met Rob and his wife Josie when a 10 year old Ash Barty became a participant of the Tennis Australia Brisbane Academy where I was the sport psychologist at the time. Rob and Josie attended my very first parent support session and after that time I came to know them as fantastic supports for their daughters Ash, Ali, and Sarah. Rob and Josie are in my opinion incredible example of parents who have greatly contributed to the healthy mental toughness of Ash and it will be a fantastic opportunity for all participating parents to hear Rob's advice for parents on behalf of Josie and himself.

Peter Smith (5-Time NCAA Championship Winning USC Coach)

Things did not get off to the best start for myself and Coach Smith. Our first meeting was when he called me to his office after becoming the new Pepperdine Mens Coach where I was a student, to let me know that he was having to cut my scholarship to a % that I likely couldn't afford. Fortunately we were able to work out an alternative option which allowed me to stay which led to an incredible 3 years being coached by Peter including our team reaching #2 in the nation. Of course, Peter went on to become a legend of college coaching and also, along with his wife Tammie, raised 3 sons who have gone on to becomes great tennis players and people as well. It will be a treat to hear from Peter regarding his advice for parenting healthy mental toughness from both a coach and parent's perspective.

Here's what Dan Kiernan said about SotoTennis Academy's experience of the workshops...
